Sherrill and Ciattarelli face off in close New Jersey governor contest

Competitive Gubernatorial Race in New Jersey

Montclair, New Jersey – As Election Day arrives, candidates from both major political parties are vying for success in New Jersey’s tight gubernatorial race.

Democratic candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill expressed optimism after casting her vote in Montclair. She mentioned, “We’ve had rallies with thousands attending, and the early voting turnout looks promising. I think I’ll do quite well today.”

On the other side, Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli, who is running for governor for the third consecutive time, seemed confident as well. He nearly won against Democratic Governor Phil Murphy in the previous election.

“If we see a repeat of the turnout from Election Day 2021, or even better, victory is within reach,” Ciattarelli remarked on Fox News’ “Hannity” just before the polls opened.

Hours earlier, Ciattarelli had rallied supporters in Neptune City, suggesting they would declare victory shortly after polls closed. “In about 28 hours, we will win this race,” he stated confidently.

New Jersey and Virginia are the only states holding gubernatorial elections the year following a presidential election. These races tend to attract significant attention nationwide and are often viewed as indicators heading into the next midterm elections, where Republicans are looking to maintain slim majorities in Congress. This year serves as an important test of former President Donald Trump’s agenda, even though he isn’t on the ballot.

Recent weeks have seen Ciattarelli gain ground on Sherrill in a state where Democrats still hold a slight edge in registration, although Republican registrations have surged in recent years.

Both candidates highlighted the strong early voting turnout. Sherrill stated, “We’ve exceeded our expectations for early voting. The numbers are encouraging, and we’re aiming to count every vote.” Meanwhile, Ciattarelli praised his campaign’s achievements in mail-in voting, affirming they had met all expectations.

Interestingly, Trump won New Jersey with a smaller margin last year compared to four years prior. He rallied his base in the closing stages of the campaign, emphasizing the need for turnout in non-presidential elections.

“We appreciate what the president is doing to energize the supporters. The future of our state is at stake,” Ciattarelli remarked after a campaign event in northern New Jersey.

Despite Trump’s influence, Sherrill frequently linked Ciattarelli to the former president, claiming he was firmly aligned with Trump’s views.

The campaign was further complicated when Sherrill’s military records were mistakenly shared by the National Personnel Records Center, which included sensitive personal information.

Sherrill’s military history came under scrutiny, particularly regarding a disallowed attendance at her graduation from the Naval Academy amid a cheating scandal. She wasn’t implicated but served nearly a decade in the Navy afterward.

In the final debate, tensions rose when Sherrill accused Ciattarelli of being connected to pharmaceutical companies related to opioid-related deaths in New Jersey, referencing a medical publishing company he owned that promoted certain opioid treatments.

The trend in New Jersey has historically favored the governor of the party in the White House. However, Democrats have a notable advantage this election cycle.

Voters in New Jersey have not elected a governor from the same party for over 50 years, traditionally favoring Republicans in the last three elections. This election may shift those longstanding trends.
