Colts Trade for Gardner
The Colts are set to give up two first-round picks along with wide receiver Adonai Mitchell to acquire defensive back Sauce Gardner. This steep price tag reflects Indianapolis’s ambition to not only dominate the AFC South but also to secure a chance at the Super Bowl while they feel they still have a viable opportunity.
Typically, this would be regarded as a fantastic move. But there are significant concerns about Gardner at the moment, particularly given the amount the Colts are investing. It’s clear that during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, he appeared to be on the path to becoming one of the league’s premier cornerbacks. However, his performance and effectiveness have slipped over the last couple of years. He intercepted 20 passes in his rookie season, followed by 11 in his second year, but only managed 15 in total over the past two seasons. Some of this may relate to the Jets deciding to move on from him, but it also raises questions about whether he’s simply not playing at his previous level.
The upside for Indianapolis is that Gardner’s downturn may stem from issues within the Jets organization, rather than being a reflection of his abilities. If this risk pays off and he regains his All-Pro form, this could become a franchise-altering trade in a positive way. However, if his recent struggles turn out to be the new norm, it might prove detrimental to the team.
Reports suggested that Gardner was unhappy and struggled to connect with new head coach Aaron Glenn, which adds a layer of complexity to this trade. It seems odd that the Colts had to part with two first-round picks given these circumstances. Still, the potential payoff, particularly if it means a Super Bowl appearance this year, might justify the cost.
This deal offers a substantial return for a player who was about to be squeezed out in New York. The Colts’ draft pick is anticipated to land in the 20s, providing the Jets with a much-needed asset to help turn their situation around.
Sauce Gardner is undoubtedly a talented player, but the Colts made a significant investment in a market that favors sellers and for a player whose recent track record raises doubts. In a year or so, this trade might be reassessed, as it’s pivotal for the future of Colts football.
