Intel officer who challenged John Brennan seeks federal investigation to rebuild Americans' confidence in fair elections

Former Intelligence Officer Challenges Brennan on Election Interference

WASHINGTON — In a recent interview, former CIA Director John Brennan discussed the need for the Trump administration’s investigation into interference in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections to focus on “restoring” public trust rather than seeking “revenge.”

Thomas Speciale, a veteran intelligence officer and former Republican Senate candidate from Virginia, attended a panel featuring Brennan at George Mason University on October 30. He aimed to raise two pressing questions regarding the actions of Brennan and other Obama administration officials.

First, he wanted to know whether a known false document was cited in a 2016 intelligence report that suggested Russian President Vladimir Putin had a “clear preference” for Donald Trump. Second, he questioned why Brennan and 50 other former intelligence officials signed a letter that attempted to counter a damaging October 2020 report about Hunter Biden’s laptop, which allegedly displayed characteristics of a Russian intelligence operation.

Speciale described the U.S. intelligence agencies’ involvement in aggressive counterintelligence operations that “targeted all of America” since 2016. Brennan, along with former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper, responded by asserting that Speciale’s actions influenced the 2020 election after signing a letter declaring the Hunter Biden story as Russian disinformation, which Joe Biden later referenced during a debate against Trump.

Addressing the 51 former intelligence officials involved, Speciale stated that their “security clearances are gone, and their reputations are in jeopardy,” emphasizing the importance of accountability within the Trump administration.

He recounted conversations with two signatories of the letter. One claimed he signed it as a favor for a friend, while the other noted that multiple versions of the laptop existed.

Speciale expressed hope that the Department of Justice would review the matter, highlighting the need for thorough investigations into the actions of career intelligence officers that may have influenced elections. “While any treason generally involves a foreign power, these individuals could potentially face charges for seditious conspiracy due to their role in undermining Trump and affecting the 2020 election,” he asserted.

When discussing how a federal investigation into Brennan should unfold, Speciale maintained that it ought to focus on recovery rather than revenge.

Brennan defended his letter and criticized Speciale for spreading what he deemed “disinformation.” Speciale speculated that Brennan’s anger stemmed from a deep-seated animosity towards Trump.

Earlier this summer, Tulsi Gabbard released declassified documents regarding the intelligence assessment of Trump’s alleged interference in the electoral process, accusing Brennan, Clapper, and former FBI Director James Comey of engaging in a “treasonous conspiracy.” Speciale raised concerns about a series of emails from December 2016 indicating a lack of consensus among top intelligence leaders about a vital assessment.

Speciale’s scrutiny of Brennan included the observation that there was no evidence supporting claims that Putin ordered Russian support for Trump or that Russia viewed Trump’s victory as likely.

A report from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in 2020 concluded that Brennan had dismissed a “veteran” military officer’s concerns about a subpar intelligence report linking Putin to a desire to support Trump. It also highlighted that inaccuracies from ex-MI6 spy Christopher Steele’s documents were incorporated into a 2017 assessment despite objections.

In July, a whistleblower claimed pressure from Obama officials affected the 2017 assessment regarding Russian election interference, asserting that the government should not manipulate the truth to impact elections.

Reflecting on the current state of American politics, Speciale remarked, “It’s disheartening that one can easily convince intelligence agents to sign a petition aimed at swaying an election.” He expressed his frustration over these developments.

Requests for comments from Brennan’s representatives were left unanswered.
