Body of American Hostage Returned from Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Monday that the remains of Staff Sergeant Itai Chen, a 19-year-old dual citizen of the U.S. and Israel, have been repatriated from Gaza for burial. Currently, seven other hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza.

According to the military, following the identification process conducted by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, military representatives, in collaboration with the Israeli Police and the Military Rabbinate, informed Chen’s family that his body had been returned.

Chen was a combat soldier serving in the 77th Battalion, 7th Armored Brigade. He tragically lost his life on October 7, 2023, amid intense fighting near Kibbutz Nir Oz, an area severely affected by Hamas attacks. During the assault, approximately 500 Hamas militants attacked the kibbutz, resulting in the deaths of 47 out of the 251 individuals taken hostage that day. Chen’s tank was struck in the skirmish, leading to his body being taken to Gaza. His death was officially confirmed on March 10, 2024.

Recovery After Nearly 700 Days

Chen grew up in Netanya, Israel, where he was the middle child in a family of three. Known for his warmth, dedication, and humor, he was a student in an advanced academic program. He enjoyed outdoor activities, including basketball and rock climbing, and even worked as a camp counselor before joining the military.

Despite sustaining an injury while counseling, he insisted on finishing the summer to set a positive example for the children he supervised. Driven by a strong sense of duty, he enlisted as an armored soldier. He is survived by his parents Ruby and Haggitt, along with his brothers Roy and Aron.

For over two years, Chen’s parents campaigned tirelessly for the return of their son. They met with high-ranking officials in Israel and Washington, advocating not only for their son but for all hostages and the remains of those who died in the conflict.

The Israeli government expressed its solidarity with the Chen family and all families of deceased hostages, stating, “We will not compromise and spare no effort until all hostages are returned home. May his memory be blessed.”

The Hostage and Missing Families Forum commented that Chen’s return provides some relief to his family, which has endured fear and hardship for over two years. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring the return of all hostages.

Chen’s funeral is scheduled for this week and will take place with full military honors.
