Creative Approach to Dating in NYC
In a bold move during last Sunday’s marathon, a single woman in New York City opted for an unconventional way to attract potential dates. Tired of the usual dating app experience, she held up a large sign displaying her phone number as she ran.
Lindsey Geduzzi, 33, reflected on the dating scene in New York, describing it as “pretty painful” for many. “I think apps are becoming obsolete in a way,” she noted. “They just don’t work for most people anymore… So I thought, ‘You know what? I’m an active person. All these guys are active. Let’s take my shot.’”
And take her shot she did. The Astoria resident made her sign impossible to miss with a playful declaration: “Strong legs, big glutes, give me a call.” “It’s something fun,” she explained about the cheeky phrase. “That’s frivolous.”
As an operations manager at a law firm, Geduzzi likened the NYC dating experience to a marathon itself—“tough” and “tiring.” She pointed out that while there are many options, people often fixate on small flaws in potential partners, leading to quick exits.
Her unique strategy involved setting up at a location in Williamsburg, where friends and family cheered her on, including her mother, who optimistically remarked that “Today could be the first day of the rest of my life.” Geduzzi laughed at the thought.
However, when it was time to display her sign, nerves kicked in. “The truth is, I essentially had my own ad,” she admitted. “When I first got it, I was a little shy… I thought, ‘Oh, this is going to be a little nerve-wracking.’”
But her worries quickly faded as runners reacted positively. “I started laughing and smiling, and people stopped to flex their leg muscles for me,” Geduzzi recalled. An older gentleman even turned back to ask, “Where were you 40 years ago?”
It proved to be a light-hearted moment during a grueling race. Other spectators also joined in the fun, holding up cheeky signs of their own, including one that read, “No one likes to finish early.”
While Geduzzi hasn’t yet received any calls from interested runners, she doesn’t regret her bold attempt at connecting with someone. “I wish I had gotten a few phone calls or texts, but that’s okay,” she said. “Marathon day is my favorite day of the year in this city.”
