UPS Cargo Plane Crash Near Louisville Airport

A UPS cargo plane crashed on Tuesday close to Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, Kentucky.

Initial investigations revealed that there were three crew members aboard. Reports indicate that all three lost their lives in the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and UPS confirmed that Flight 2976 went down around 5:15 p.m. ET shortly after taking off from the airport.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was en route to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, according to FAA officials.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg mentioned that the aircraft had been carrying 280,000 gallons of fuel, which resulted in a significant fireball upon crashing.

Footage of the aftermath quickly spread on social media, showcasing the extensive damage and flames.

While Louisville Metro Police reported multiple injuries, UPS stated that there were no fatalities or injuries among their staff.

“The scene is still active, with fire and debris in the area,” the police stated in a post on X. “Please stay clear of the area.”

Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky shared on social media, “We are aware of the plane crash near Louisville International Airport. First responders are on-site, and we will provide additional updates as we receive them. Please keep the pilot, crew, and all affected in your thoughts.”

Per local news reports, at least three individuals have died, and eleven others suffered injuries. Additionally, there are reports of two individuals missing from a nearby auto shop.

Authorities announced that the airfield at SDF has been closed and that TSA security screenings have been temporarily halted. Passengers scheduled to travel to or from the airport on Tuesday or Wednesday are advised to monitor flight status closely.
