Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg secures re-election against two opponents for a second term

Bragg Faces Challengers in Manhattan DA Re-election

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had two opponents in the race for re-election on Tuesday, despite some contentious choices during his first term.

The Associated Press reported that with 81% of the votes counted just before 9:50 PM, Bragg secured 74% of the vote against Republican Maud Maron and independent candidate Diana Florence. Both challengers criticized him for being too lenient on crime.

Bragg, who took office in 2021 after replacing Cyrus Vance Jr., was expected to maintain his position in a strongly Democratic city, even amid scrutiny over his decision to charge former President Donald Trump with business fraud.

Maron, a former public defender and mother of four, framed her campaign around restoring safety and justice for law-abiding citizens, pledging to overturn Bragg’s anti-crime measures.

Florence, who previously served as an assistant district attorney under Vance, echoed similar sentiments, accusing Bragg of being too forgiving to repeat offenders and promising a tougher approach. She also attracted support from billionaire Knicks owner James Dolan with her independent “Safer Manhattan” platform.

Earlier in the year, Bragg had convincingly won the Democratic primary against former prosecutor Patrick Timmins.

His campaign emphasized tackling gun violence and hate crimes while increasing focus on sexual offenses.

Bragg’s campaign website touts his efforts to develop a thoughtful strategy for community safety and justice.

From the outset, Bragg faced backlash for a memo he issued on his first day, which instructed staff to steer away from seeking prison sentences for certain offenses and to reduce felony charges in specific circumstances, including armed robbery.

Another point of contention arose when he charged Jose Alba, a deli worker, with manslaughter for allegedly defending himself against a violent shoplifter. This charge was later dropped following public outcry.

While Democrats prosecuted Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign, garnering praise from progressive factions, the former president is currently appealing a guilty verdict related to misleading business records.

The trial surrounding subway vigilante Daniel Penny, charged in the strangling death of homeless man Jordan Neely, stirred controversy but ultimately resulted in Penny’s acquittal.
