California approves Prop 50 while Newsom achieves his objective

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s controversial “Proposition 50” secured an easy win on Tuesday, setting the stage for Democrats to potentially gain five crucial Congressional seats in the 2026 midterms.

The results, announced by the Associated Press just after 8 PM local time, showed that over 74% of voters supported the measure, with about 25% opposed.

This partisan initiative, led by Newsom, was introduced by a Democratic-majority Legislature as a response to Republican redistricting efforts in Texas aiming to add five seats.

The possible loss of five Congressional seats would be a significant blow to California’s Republican Party, which currently holds a scant nine out of the 52 seats.

This special election, described as a back-and-forth reaction, has attracted plenty of attention and criticism due to its projected cost of over $200 million to taxpayers, especially concerning the state’s existing financial challenges.

Despite the expenses, Newsom garnered strong backing for Prop 50 from notable Democratic figures. Former President Barack Obama and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared in advertisements promoting the initiative across the state’s roughly 40 million residents. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also endorsed the measure.

Newsom’s support for the proposal represents a strategic move in the face of potential challenges from Trump amid speculation about the latter’s presidential aspirations in 2028. “Republicans are trying to rig the next election and steal enough seats in Congress to give them two more years of unlimited power,” Obama stated in one of the ads. “We can stop the Republican movement.”

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger criticized Prop 50, remarking to CNN’s Jake Tapper, “Texas started it. They did something terribly wrong. And all of a sudden California said, ‘Well, we have to do something terribly wrong,’ too.” He added that Proposition 50 diminishes public power.

The task of redrawing the state’s electoral maps now falls to the California Legislature, as the California Citizen Redistricting Commission (CRC) has been paused until after the 2030 U.S. Census.

The newly proposed boundaries are expected to tighten conservative districts in northern and southern California while fragmenting more cities and counties into multiple districts, as opposed to the usual two.

Opponents raise concerns about fair representation for minority groups. However, an analysis from the Public Policy Institute of California suggests the new maps won’t undermine minority voting.

These changes could enable Democrats to flip House seats in the upcoming midterms, complicating Trump’s Republican objectives. To take control of the House, Democrats need to flip just three seats.

For Newsom, this represents a significant political win, reinforcing his strategy to combat Trump as speculation builds regarding a possible presidential run in 2028.
