Mamdani’s Victory Speech Critiqued by Van Jones
On Tuesday, CNN’s Van Jones offered a critical assessment of Zoran Mamdani, the newly elected Democratic Mayor of New York, for the tone he took in his victory speech compared to his campaign style.
Mamdani, who spoke for over 20 minutes, seemed to adopt a more aggressive tone during his address. Jones, speaking during CNN’s election night coverage, argued that this approach did not help Mamdani broaden his appeal. “I don’t think the softer, warmer, more inclusive Mamdani that I saw on the campaign trail was there,” Jones remarked. He emphasized that many people are uncertain about whether they can align with Mamdani, questioning if he would be inclusive or if he would take a more combative approach in power. “I think tonight he missed an opportunity to open up and bring more people into the tent,” he said.
Jones also noted, “His tone was sharp, and the way he used the microphone felt almost like shouting. That wasn’t the Mamdani from TikTok or in those great interviews.” He felt this represented a notable change in character, as the warm, approachable figure who connected with working people was absent from the speech. “Tonight, he missed an opportunity to open himself up, and I think that’s probably going to cost him going forward,” he added.
With around 90% of votes counted, Mamdani led the race with 50.4% of the vote, outpacing independent candidate Andrew Cuomo who received 41.6%, and Republican Curtis Sliwa at 7.1%. As reported by CNN on Wednesday morning, Mamdani is set to make history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor and one of the youngest, at just 34 years old. He was elected despite some controversy surrounding his policy decisions and actions during the campaign.
His platform included proposals for higher taxes on businesses and wealthy citizens, a rent freeze, free bus services, city-operated grocery stores, and free child care.
