Trump Reflects on Republican Losses in New Jersey and Virginia
On Tuesday night, Trump stated that the Republican losses in New Jersey and Virginia were influenced by his perceived lack of electoral leadership and the ongoing government shutdown, according to insights from pollsters.
This commentary came after he launched Truth Social, following the outcomes of significant elections in both states and the New York mayoral race.
In his message, Trump highlighted that, “according to pollsters, the two reasons Republicans lost tonight’s election were Trump not being on the ballot and the government shutdown.”
The results in Virginia were particularly disappointing for Republicans. In the gubernatorial race, Democrat Abigail Spanberger triumphed over Republican Winsome Earl Sears. By 11:09 p.m. ET, Spanberger had garnered 57.2% of the votes, leaving Sears with 42.6%. More than 95% of the ballots had been counted by that hour.
Earl Sears had previously distanced herself from Trump’s administrations. Just before Trump declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination in November 2022, she was quoted saying that she couldn’t support him, according to various reports.
“I couldn’t support him. I just couldn’t,” she expressed. Furthermore, she mentioned, “True leaders understand when they are in charge. True leaders understand that it’s time to step down from the stage, and voters have given us that very clear message.”
While Trump previously won the Republican primary and successfully claimed victory in battleground states, he notably did not reference Earl Sears during a conference call in Virginia the day before the election.
In another key race, incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares was in a tight race with radical Democrat Jay Jones, who had a controversial past involving violence. By 11:09 p.m. ET, Miyares had amassed 47% of the votes compared to Jones’ 52.6%, with over 95% of the votes counted.
In the race for Governor, Democrat Ghazala Hashmi earned 55.2% of the vote against Republican Josh Reed, who received 44.1%, again with more than 95% of the votes counted by the same time.
Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Democratic Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill claimed 56% of the vote. As of 11 p.m. ET, he had a substantial lead over Republican Jack Ciatarelli, who only managed to secure 43.4%.
In New York City, far-left Democrat Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Trump had previously endorsed Cuomo, acknowledging that Sliwa didn’t seem to have a feasible route to victory. Mamdani captured 50.4% of the vote, while Cuomo received 41.6%, and Sliwa trailed with 7.1%, based on 90% of the votes counted by 11:03 p.m. ET.
