Ramaswamy urges the GOP to concentrate on affordability following election defeats.

Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy pointed out two key lessons for his Republican peers following disappointing off-year election results in New Jersey, Virginia, and New York City.

As a strong supporter of President Trump and a leading candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial race, he openly discussed the party’s struggles in a video shared on X late Tuesday.

“We did poorly in New Jersey, Virginia, and New York City. The Democrats won all three contests decisively,” Ramaswamy noted.

“There are two crucial takeaways for our party. Firstly, we need to concentrate on affordability. We have to make the American Dream attainable by reducing the costs of essentials like electricity, groceries, healthcare, and housing. It’s about figuring out how to do that,” he emphasized.

“Secondly, we ought to distance ourselves from identity politics. That approach doesn’t align with the values of the Republican Party. It’s a tactic of the woke left, which simply isn’t us. We’re more focused on character than on skin color or religion. That’s the heart of who we are.”

As the party grappled with these thoughts, Ramaswamy expressed his views, while Trump also conveyed concerns about the party’s image to Republican senators during breakfast the following morning, saying, “I don’t think this was beneficial for the Republican Party.”

The Democratic Party prominently featured the cost of living in their campaign strategies.

In Virginia, where Trump lost the previous year’s election by about 5.78 percentage points, incoming governor Abigail Spanberger achieved a notable victory, winning by 14.6 percentage points.

During her victory address, Spanberger promised a pragmatic approach to enhance affordability, mentioning plans to “reduce bureaucracy” to lower housing costs and “increase energy production” to tackle rising utility bills, though she didn’t elaborate on energy sources.

Ramaswamy suggested that Republicans should prioritize affordability, mirroring a central theme of Spanberger’s campaign.

In New Jersey, Trump fell behind by 5.9 percentage points last year; now, with most votes counted, Democratic Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill leads by 13 percentage points.

In New York City, socialist Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani secured just over 50% of the vote, defeating Trump-endorsed former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who garnered 41.6%, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, who received 7.1%.

Mamdani proposed initiatives like city-operated grocery stores, free public transportation, and a rent freeze.

Although Ramaswamy didn’t provide specifics on his call to move away from identity politics, it likely relates to Virginia gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle Sears, who had been seen as a potential trailblazer as one of the first black women to hold the position, while lieutenant governor John Reed was viewed as a candidate who could be among the first openly gay individuals in statewide office.

Notably, Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate, could also be the first Hindu governor in the country, although this aspect of his identity has rarely been foregrounded in his campaign.
