Angelina Jolie Visits War-Torn Kherson Amid Ongoing Russian Aggression

Academy Award-winning actress and former UN envoy Angelina Jolie visited Kherson, a focal point of severe war crimes by Russia, meeting with families affected by the conflict. This visit, I think, highlights the ongoing human suffering in the region.

During her visit, which was shared on social media, Jolie was seen wearing a bulletproof vest adorned with Ukrainian insignia. She interacted with children in a bunker that has been constructed to shield residents from ongoing attacks. It’s kind of striking, really, to see an actress in such a serious context.

This isn’t Jolie’s first trip to Ukraine; she previously traveled to Lviv in April 2022, engaging with refugees and volunteers. Her role as a UN Special Envoy for Refugees from 2012 to 2022, and as a Goodwill Ambassador prior to that, adds weight to her visits. Still, one wonders how effective these visits might ultimately be in changing the situation on the ground.

Her presence puts Kherson back in the spotlight, where remaining residents—around 150,000—have faced relentless threats from Russian drones. Reports have accused Russian forces of war crimes, intentionally targeting civilians and aiming to inflict terror and hardship through artillery and shelling.

A recent report from the United Nations’ Independent International Commission of Inquiry into Ukraine noted that Russian forces were “deliberately targeting civilians and civilian goods” over an extensive area. That’s just, well, alarming to think about. The commission identified these drone strikes as crimes against humanity, including murder and forced displacement, which raises serious ethical concerns.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, President Vladimir Putin’s administration has continued the war without a clear end in sight. Interestingly, former President Trump has been vocal about promoting a ceasefire, even proposing a meeting with Putin last August while also imposing sanctions on Russia’s oil industry. There’s a sort of irony in those efforts, isn’t there?

Although parts of Kherson Oblast are still under Russian control, Putin claimed to have annexed the area in 2022, even as Ukrainian forces managed to reclaim about 30% of Kherson by November of that year. Amid all this, it appears that Ukraine has consistently rejected any proposals that involve compromising on territorial integrity, stating that any agreement must consider the future of these lands.
