Cleveland Browns’ David Njoku Reflects on Staying with the Team
The Cleveland Browns may be struggling in the NFL this season, but veteran tight end David Njoku is determined to remain with the team rather than face a trade before the league’s deadline.
Since being drafted 29th overall in 2017, Njoku has dedicated his career to the Browns, passionately serving as both a player and a leader. Despite the team’s lackluster record of 55-84-1, Njoku expressed his relief and excitement when asked about not being traded.
“Of course, that’s always a possibility. This is the NFL,” Njoku remarked. “But I’m in Cleveland, baby. I’m not going anywhere. I’m not leaving here.”
As he spoke, his enthusiasm grew, especially when reporters pressed him about stepping down from his role. “No way, no,” he asserted confidently.
Turned into a trade target due to his expiring contract, Njoku, who is 29, will become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Yet, he expressed a desire to negotiate a deal to stay with the Browns. When asked if contract discussions had started, he responded with a grin, saying, “I can’t say.” He also showcased custom jewelry, pointing out its unique elements—an Ohio shape paired with a Nigerian flag. “You didn’t see that, did you? That’s good, right?” he asked with pride.
While some players might become frustrated with a lack of wins—Njoku has only seen playoff action three times in nine seasons—he couldn’t hide his happiness when trade day passed without any news. “I’m so happy, dude. I don’t know how else to describe it. I’m so happy,” he said.
This season, through seven games, Njoku has made 27 catches from 41 targets, totaling 260 yards and two touchdowns. He also has a promising partner in tight end Harold Fannin Jr., who has contributed significantly with 38 receptions for 352 yards and two touchdowns.
Fannin’s rise as a dependable pass catcher has added to the trade rumors surrounding Njoku. Still, it seems likely he’ll wrap up the season with the Browns, leaving future contract negotiations to be determined later.
