she is waiting
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch hasn’t received an official offer to stay on from Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani as of Wednesday. However, sources indicate that influential figures are pushing for her to remain in a Socialist administration.
Before the election on Tuesday, Mamdani mentioned to Tisch his desire to discuss keeping her on the team after November 4, according to someone familiar with the discussions.
Following his significant victory, Mamdani reconfirmed his intention to retain Tisch, commending her efforts to eliminate “incompetence and corruption” in the police department linked to Mayor Eric Adams.
“I look forward to continuing our work together to build an effective government,” he stated during an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America”.
This commitment to keep Tisch in her position came as Mamdani faced backlash from the Democratic Socialists of America for his previous anti-police remarks, especially those made in 2020 when he labeled the NYPD as “racist.”
Prominent New Yorkers, such as Governor Kathy Hochul and House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have both publicly and privately encouraged Mamdani to retain Tisch as he navigates support.
Sources believe this decision might ease concerns about a potential spike in crime under Mamdani’s leadership.
In the meantime, Tisch is reportedly being urged by Mamdani’s inner circle, including some from his wealthy family, to accept the potential offer. Law enforcement officials, though, are cautious about his plans for criminal justice reforms.
“It would be in the city’s best interest if he retained Chief Tisch,” remarked Vincent Valleron, president of the Sergeants’ Benevolent Association.
“He can’t do well if he doesn’t collaborate with the NYPD.”
There are reports that Mamdani has a contingency plan in case Tisch turns down the offer.
He is contemplating appointing Issa Abassi, a former NYC police chief, as the new chief, according to some sources.
Another ex-New York City police officer, Rodney Harrison, is vying for the position of deputy mayor for security.
Still, some officers remain doubtful about Mamdani’s commitment to the NYPD, noting that he hardly mentioned crime during his victory speech.
“He’s deceiving everyone, and now we’re stuck with him,” one official expressed. “He seems to have aims beyond policing.”
On Wednesday, Mamdani introduced a transition team to assist in staffing his future administration.
His campaign did not respond to inquiries for comments. Tisch also remained silent.
