Body Found Near Cliffs in Southern California

A body has been discovered at the base of the striking cliffs in one of Southern California’s wealthiest coastal areas, marking the second such incident in just two months. On October 30, the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department (PVEPD) responded to reports of a body found along a steep cliffside near the 1400 block of Paseo del Mar. Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department helped retrieve the body of an unidentified man from the rocky shore below. Police Chief Luke Herringa stated that there were no indications of foul play.

This discovery is reminiscent of a similar tragedy earlier this year, when another body was located on the beach just south of Paseo del Mar. On August 30, responders were called to the scene where a man’s body had been found at the bottom of a cliff. Witnesses noted that the victim seemed to be male, but his identity has yet to be revealed. Again, authorities found no evidence of a crime involved in this case.

These incidents seem part of a worrying trend. Back in late 2024, human remains separated by blocks were discovered in the same vicinity. A passerby found what appeared to be a human skull and multiple bones on November 16, prompting a coroner’s inquiry to identify the remains and determine the cause of death.

Just over a month later, on December 25, police were alerted to human feet that had washed ashore near Paseo del Mar. A day later, other partial human remains were located on the beach. Again, the coroner confirmed these were human remains, and search efforts were launched with cadaver dogs.

Police have since announced that several bodies recovered along this waterfront since 2023 have been identified through DNA testing. Among the identified were Mark Paulson, 68, whose femur was connected to a 2021 boating incident; Raymond Simeros, 57, whose remains were found in late 2024; and Zhaoliang Tang, 62, a missing fisherman confirmed through DNA from lower leg parts.

Capt. Aaron Belda reported that the high risks associated with the cliffs have reignited discussions about public safety in this popular region. A prior report highlighted numerous emergencies, including deaths and rescues associated with cliff incidents.

Wade Kelsey, the fire chief, emphasized the cliffs’ dangers, noting, “Most of the area is very unstable… it’s dangerous to approach the cliff edge.” Yet, these cliffs remain largely unfenced, allowing public access.

This affluent area is one of California’s wealthiest, with a median household income around $202,569 and average home values nearing $2.69 million. Ongoing discussions concern how to balance protecting the landscape with ensuring public safety.

The investigation into the recent discovery is ongoing, and authorities are still working to identify the man found near Paseo del Mar. Anyone with information can contact the PVEPD for assistance.
