Republicans advised to tackle Gen Z's affordability issues following Mamdani's victory

Democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani’s recent win in New York’s mayoral race has surprised both conservative and moderate observers. Some are cautioning the Republican Party that, to secure Gen Z’s support, it must address their affordability issues or risk alienating a significant voting demographic.

“Young people are struggling,” said Fox News contributor Brett Cooper on “Fox & Friends.” She pointed out how many of them, when they look at their peers, see uncertainty about starting families or buying homes.

“For a lot of young folks, those goals seem far removed. So when discussions turn to economic issues and affordability, they may not focus on the details behind those promises—they just want solutions,” she noted.

Mamdani, mirroring some of President Trump’s campaign themes, has positioned the affordability crisis as a key focus of his agenda, vowing to make New York City more economically accessible for all.

Cooper expressed skepticism about Mamdani’s ability to fulfill these pledges, yet emphasized that Republicans should concentrate on the concerns of Gen Z regarding homeownership and family life. “I think the GOP really needs to engage with young people. We must see tangible changes for them; otherwise, we risk losing their support,” she warned.

Gen Z, drawn to Mamdani’s ideology, turned out in significant numbers for him, lured by his clear anti-capitalist and anti-Israel messages.

Cooper suggested that the narrative of victimhood perpetuated in academic circles is partly to blame for this shift. She described it as a mindset that promotes the idea that personal effort may not suffice to overcome systemic oppression.

Emily Sturge, a campus reform reporter, echoed this concern, asserting that the progressive trends seen on college campuses have significantly influenced young voters. She cautioned that the Republican Party cannot afford to overlook Gen Z.

Sturge remarked, “For years, we’ve raised alarms about higher education demonizing capitalism while spreading a socialist perspective to students.” She added that the left often leverages issues like immigration and abortion to appeal to young female voters.

Despite these challenges, Sturge expressed optimism about the direction Gen Z is heading, noting a shift towards faith, family, and conservative values. She recalled how, just a year ago, Gen Z played a pivotal role in helping Trump secure the presidency, suggesting that younger voters are evolving politically.
