Tragic Loss for Cowboys Defensive End Marshawn Kneeland’s Family
The sudden passing of Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland marks the second heart-wrenching incident for his family in just two years.
Last February, just two months prior to being picked in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, he lost his mother, Wendy. That loss was profound.
Marshawn died by suicide following a police chase on the Dallas Parkway shortly after midnight Thursday, as reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was only 24.
Just a couple of weeks before the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, where he was preparing to showcase his skills, his mother passed away from an undisclosed illness. The Dallas Morning News noted that they shared a dream—his aspiration to turn professional one day.
The Cowboys selected him during the April draft that year.
Marshawn was found at 1:31 a.m. with what authorities believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Frisco police.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Marshawn carried a small urn with his mother’s ashes, about two inches in height, worn around his neck.
Reflecting on his mother’s passing, Marshawn had expressed, “It’s been really hard… I always had a dream. I told her I was going to the NFL, and I achieved that.” He added that despite the hardships, he still felt her presence with him, carrying her urn everywhere.
During the police pursuit, they learned that Marshawn had been expressing suicidal thoughts.
Earlier Wednesday night, Plano police were called to check on him due to concerns but did not make contact.
TMZ Sports obtained an emergency call audio where his girlfriend, identified as Catalina, mentioned she received a troubling message from him while trying to reach his agent. She conveyed that Marshawn was armed and had a history of mental health struggles, stating he had mentioned he would “end it all.”
Another dispatcher noted that the NFL had reached out to the police about a player sending a farewell message to his family.
Just days before his passing, Marshawn had played 17 snaps in a game against the Cardinals and even scored a touchdown on a blocked punt.
In response to this tragedy, the Dallas Cowboys expressed their sorrow, stating, “Marshawn was a beloved teammate… Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend and family.” The NFL echoed these sentiments, offering support to his loved ones and teammates.
The Cowboys are now preparing for their upcoming game on November 17 against the Raiders in Las Vegas.
Marshawn had participated in 11 games as a rookie last season and seven games this season, recording one sack.
