Padres Hire Craig Stammen as New Manager

It seems like experience isn’t everything when it comes to management.

The San Diego Padres announced the hiring of Craig Stammen, a special assistant and former relief pitcher, as their new manager on Thursday. Stammen, aged 41, has secured a three-year contract despite lacking any prior managerial or coaching roles.

He takes over from Mike Shildt, who stepped down after the last season.

“Craig has been a vital presence in our organization for nearly a decade,” stated AJ Preller, the president of baseball operations and general manager. “His deep understanding of the organization and his innate leadership qualities make him a great fit for the role. Throughout his playing career, Craig has shown a unique ability to elevate those around him. His character, competitive nature, and talent for uniting people set him apart as the perfect candidate to lead the Padres.”

This appointment came as quite the surprise, especially since Stammen’s name hadn’t been mentioned in relation to the team’s managerial search.

Stammen, who retired in August 2023, had spent six seasons with the Padres, from 2017 to 2022.

For the upcoming 2024 season, he’s set to take on a “hybrid coaching position” that spans both major and minor leagues. This role will allow him to mentor younger players as well as work with established ones, which could be beneficial for star third baseman Manny Machado.

Kevin Ace from the Union-Tribune noted that during Stammen’s six years with the Padres, he had naturally stepped into a leadership position, serving as a mentor to various players across the clubhouse.

Interestingly, the Padres don’t seem overly concerned with managerial experience in their hiring practices, as all candidates considered lacked prior roles in managing.

Stammen outshone other notable figures such as Albert Pujols and pitching coach Ruben Niebla during the selection process. Sources suggest that the team appreciates his communication and leadership skills, particularly since he’ll manage a roster that includes six players he’s previously played with.

Despite a solid 90-72 record last season, the Padres faced challenges this offseason, including the loss of starting pitcher Yu Darvish for the entire 2026 season due to elbow surgery. Additionally, All-Star closer Robert Suarez has opted to enter free agency.

Throughout his career, Stammen played for the Padres and the Nationals, pitching for Washington from 2009 to 2015 before spending 2016 in the minor leagues with the Guardians.

He made his return to the majors with the Padres in 2017, maintaining a 3.36 ERA over six years.

With Stammen’s position now filled, the focus shifts to the Rockies, who are still searching for their new manager. Other teams, including the Rangers, Braves, Twins, Angels, Giants, Nationals, and Orioles, have already filled their managerial vacancies.
