Criticism Directed at NYC Mayor for Conference Trip During Shutdown
Empire State Republicans are expressing discontent over New York City’s newly elected Mayor, Zoran Mamdani, for choosing to attend a conference in Puerto Rico amidst the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, just days after his electoral victory.
Rep. Mike Lawler (New York) stated, “If Zoran Mamdani truly cared about supporting working families, he wouldn’t head to a luxury resort right after winning the election.”
Both Politico and a local outlet reported that Mamdani is set to participate in the 2025 SOMOS conference in Puerto Rico starting Thursday. It was also reported that he would join a cocktail reception on the same night hosted by New York State’s Democratic Attorney General, Letitia James, with an invitation obtained by Fox News Digital confirming these plans.
Mamdani Lead in Polls
Lawler questioned whether Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul would also be attending the event. He raised concerns about who will look after New Yorkers during this pivotal time, asking, “Who is watching over New Yorkers on the beach?”
Interestingly, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D.N.Y.), who also nominated Lawler, was absent from the discussion. Fox News Digital attempted to reach Mamdani’s campaign and the offices of the mentioned Democrats for a comment, but there was no immediate response.
Lawler’s Strong Statement
“This is a disgrace and illustrates why so many are leaving New York,” Lawler added. “I urge every journalist covering SOMOS to demand explanations from Democrats. Why are we enjoying a party in Puerto Rico while New Yorkers face a price crisis and a government shutdown? It’s vital for people to understand where their leaders’ priorities lie.”
The SOMOS conference is an annual gathering for political figures and stakeholders in New York, where both parties typically participate. This year, the venue is the El Caribe Hilton in San Juan, described by the hotel as a “beachfront paradise” featuring extensive tropical landscaping, numerous dining options, and a spa.
The plan for the multi-day conference includes several receptions, luncheons, and panel discussions such as “Celebrating Human Services Together” and “Workforce Development Through Emerging Communities.” The event is set to conclude with a “Toes in the Sand Beachfront Party” on the final day.
Mamdani, a socialist Democratic candidate, emerged victorious against Republican Curtis Sliwa and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, earning his position as one of the youngest mayors in the city’s recent history.
