A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent sustained serious injuries on Monday while trying to take a Salvadoran man into custody in Houston, as reported by officials.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) indicated that the officer was struck in the face with a metal coffee cup by Leonel Perez Rodriguez, who has previously been deported twice.
The officer suffered significant facial burns and deep cuts, requiring 13 stitches.
This incident occurred during an attempt by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers to detain Rodriguez, 33, who had recently re-entered the U.S.
Following the event, Rodriguez was charged with illegal reentry and assaulting a federal officer, authorities noted.
According to statements, Rodriguez has a criminal record that includes convictions for child sexual assault, multiple DUIs, and repeated unlawful entries into the country. He was deported in 2013 and again in 2020 after serving time for his offenses.
Brett Bradford, ICE’s Houston Field Office Director, commented that the ongoing politicization of routine law enforcement and the dissemination of misinformation from various groups have dramatically affected the life of this young officer.
He mentioned that such situations emphasize the impact of misinterpretations surrounding immigration enforcement. The raids were part of ICE’s larger operations amid what DHS officials describe as “the longest government shutdown in U.S. history by Democrats.”
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin expressed support for the commitment of ICE officers, noting their continued operational capacity despite challenges. “Seventy percent of ICE arrests involve illegal aliens charged or convicted of crimes,” he remarked, reiterating the agency’s dedication to national security, irrespective of political hurdles.
