Robert Kraft’s Initiative Against Hate
Robert Kraft, who experienced the tragic events at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018, has taken a stand against anti-Semitism and hatred following a series of attacks, including the recent one by Hamas on October 7, 2023. In response, he is launching the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate.
Kraft emphasizes that violence has no place in our world, and he believes sports can be a unifying force to inspire collective action against hate.
Sports as a Unifying Force
“I think the sports leagues have a significant influence in spreading important messages,” Kraft shared in a recent interview. “In America, sports bring together people from all walks of life, creating a unique environment where everyone cheers for the same team.”
Unfortunately, he noted an alarming rise in hate across the country. “We need the sports community to assert itself, to wear the blue square—a symbol of unity and love, and to join forces against hatred,” he said.
The efforts of the Blue Square Alliance were highlighted during a recent event attended by sports leaders, athletes, and team owners from various leagues, including the NBA and NFL.
Gathering at Gillette Stadium
Hosted at Gillette Stadium, Kraft’s home turf, the Blue Square Alliance gathered to enlighten sports leaders on the growing threat of anti-Semitism. Discussions focused on restoring the once strong relationship between Black and Jewish communities and providing athletes with tools to confront hatred.
“This country is incredible, but lately, we seem to be losing our way,” Kraft remarked. He humorously added, “People often think I’m 35, but at 84, I’ve seen a decline in empathy unlike anything I’ve encountered before.”
“Divisiveness seems to be a prevalent theme, partly fueled by social media. We must unite and reject the spread of hate,” he concluded.
Monitoring Anti-Semitism
The Blue Square Alliance, with a dedicated team based out of Gillette Stadium, has established a command center to track public discourse surrounding anti-Jewish sentiments on social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter.
By analyzing trends from various demographics, especially Gen Z, the Alliance aims to craft impactful messages that can disrupt the cycle of hatred. “Understanding the conversation allows us to develop persuasive communications,” said Adam Katz, the organization’s president.
Kraft’s Commitment
Kraft recognizes the urgent need for intervention. Katz noted a “significant increase” in anti-Semitic rhetoric lately, calling it concerning. “We’ve witnessed more hate speech online in the past two years than in the entire prior decade,” he stated.
This mission resonates deeply with Kraft. “It’s paramount to me, following my family.”, he reflected. “It truly stands as one of the most important pursuits of my life.”
