Trump Backs Long Island Officer After Serious Incident
President Donald Trump recently met with Suffolk County Police Officer Brendon Gallagher, who sustained severe injuries during a car chase involving a drunk driver back in January.
On January 5, Gallagher was in pursuit of a Ford Mustang, driven by a drug-impaired individual in Brentwood, when a tragic accident occurred. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Cody Fisher of Brentwood, lost control of his vehicle on the Long Island Expressway and collided with Gallagher’s patrol car, which resulted in it overturning.
After the crash, Gallagher was airlifted to a nearby hospital, although the helicopter had to make an emergency landing on the road.
“Thank you @realdonaldtrump for taking the time to meet our hero SCPD Officer Brendan Gallagher!” the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association shared on social media. They posted a cheerful picture of the two of them smiling and giving a thumbs-up.
The organization also acknowledged the demands of Trump’s schedule, stating, “Despite having one of the toughest jobs in the world, President Trump is far too busy to take time for the men and women in blue.”
In terms of Gallagher’s recovery, he faced serious challenges, as officials noted that his abdominal muscles were severely damaged in the crash. After spending nine days on life support, Dr. James Voswinkel, the head of trauma at Stony Brook Hospital, commended Gallagher’s fighting spirit. “He’s working really, really aggressively to recover like a champ,” Voswinkel said, drawing applause as Gallagher was discharged from the hospital.
It’s noteworthy that this incident marked the second time Gallagher was injured in his short, three-year career. Previously, he had been stabbed while subduing a suspect.
As for follow-up comments, the Suffolk County Police Department has not responded regarding the specifics of Gallagher’s meeting with Trump, and the White House also has yet to provide details.
