Sidney Sweeney Stands Firm on Controversial American Eagle Ad
Actress Sidney Sweeney has chosen not to apologize for her participation in American Eagle’s “Great Jeans” advertisement, which some critics claimed carried a racist undertone.
In an interview with GQ, Sweeney addressed the backlash. The criticism basically revolved around the idea that, during this sensitive political climate, white individuals shouldn’t be making jokes about genetic superiority. “This was the broad criticism,” noted reporter Katherine Stoffel, before encouraging Sweeney to elaborate further on the issue.
In response, Sweeney confidently stated, “When I have an issue that I want to talk about, I think people will listen,” but she didn’t go into specifics.
When asked whether she was surprised by the strong reaction, Sweeney expressed confusion over the intensity of the response. “I love jeans,” she said. “All I wear is jeans. I literally wear jeans and a T-shirt every day.”
Regarding President Trump’s remarks about the ad on Truth Social, Sweeney simply commented, “It’s not realistic.”
As reported earlier, the ad featured the pun “Sidney Sweeney has great jeans,” which activists labeled as a subtle reference to Nazi eugenics. Some social media users took it a step further, with one individual claiming, dramatically, that the ad was “Nazi propaganda.” Another accused Sweeney of endorsing “eugenics” and suggested that American Eagle was promoting fascism through the advertisement.
A further critique came from a left-leaning woman in a viral video who claimed that the ad was intended to alienate women of color.
Mainstream media also joined the conversation, describing the ad as “controversial.” Comments from White House communications director Stephen Chan reflected a broader sentiment, as he pointed out that this kind of reaction likely contributed to Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, asserting that many Americans are “sick of this nonsense.” He criticized what he termed “cancel culture” as a driving factor behind the recent electoral decisions.
