Stefanik announces her campaign for governor of New York

Stefanik launches run for New York governor

Stefanik Enters New York Governor Race, Challenges Hochul

Representative Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) officially declared her candidacy for governor of New York on Friday, setting the stage for a contest against current Governor Kathy Hochul (D), who is seeking a second term next year.

In a two-and-a-half-minute ad that accompanied her announcement, Stefanik criticized Hochul on issues related to affordability and the rising cost of living, while also connecting her to the recently elected Mayor of New York City, Zoran Mamdani (D). The ad described Mamdani using stark language, calling him a “defunding the police, taxing, anti-Semitic communist.”

It’s worth noting that Mamdani identifies as a democratic socialist, not a communist. He has been accused of anti-Semitism due to his positions regarding Israel and the Palestinians, including a failure to denounce a controversial phrase during his campaign.

According to the ad’s narrator, “But from the ashes of Kathy Hochul’s failed policies, New York will rise as usual. You can’t defeat the spirit of the Empire State. All we need is a brave leader who is ready for battle. Elise Stefanik will make New York affordable and safe.”

Stefanik had been anticipated to run for governor and was expected to confront Hochul in public forums prior to her formal announcement. She avoided a contentious primary, as U.S. Representative Mike Lawler (N.Y.) opted not to enter the race and instead sought re-election in the House.

In response to Stefanik’s announcement, Hochul took to social media, expressing confidence and encouraging her opponent, saying “Just do it.” She also suggested that Stefanik’s campaign was primarily about delivering New York for Donald Trump.

The Hochul campaign shared the ad that linked Stefanik to Trump, arguing that she would prioritize the former president over the needs of New Yorkers, especially highlighting her key votes on Trump’s policy initiatives and his unpopularity in many Democratic areas.

“Elise Stefanik, she always puts Donald Trump above you,” was the assertion made in Hochul’s campaign ad.

In the previous election cycle, Republicans nearly secured the governor’s mansion in 2022, with Environmental Protection Agency Commissioner Lee Zeldin coming close against Hochul. That election, focused largely on crime, saw Republicans gain several important House seats, renewing hopes that the Empire State could still be competitive for them.

Republicans are also looking to capitalize on any discontent with Mamdani, who recently won the mayoral race against former Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The party has been critical of Mamdani’s past views on police funding and tax proposals for the wealthy.

While Hochul endorsed Mamdani, other significant Democratic figures chose not to back him during the mayoral race.

Conversely, Democrats might find some encouragement from their recent electoral successes, having performed well in key gubernatorial and mayoral races while also gaining ground in several state legislatures. This might boost their optimism heading into next year’s midterm elections.

The last Republican to hold the governorship in New York was George Pataki (R), who won re-election in 2002.
