University of Iowa Student Arrested for Table-Tipping Incident
A University of Iowa student was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly flipping over a Turning Point USA table on campus. This incident follows previous charges against him related to a similar altercation with the school’s Young America Foundation (YAF).
The criminal complaint states that Justin Calhoun knocked over a YAF table back on October 27. He faced charges including disorderly conduct, fifth-degree criminal mischief, and third-degree harassment, with his arrest occurring a few days later, on October 31.
Surveillance footage captured Calhoun leaving his dorm in the early afternoon and behaving aggressively towards the YAF table. The complaint details that he disrupted the gathering, made obscene gestures, and yelled phrases like “Damn it, that’s mine,” while damaging some of YAF’s property.
Additionally, a second complaint mentions a female member of YAF expressing concern for her safety due to potential future threats after the incident.
Just a week later, on November 5, Calhoun was arrested again for flipping a Turning Point USA table. Videos from the scene show him jumping over the table, pulling it, and flipping it onto its side, which sent promotional material tumbling onto the ground.
Hours later, he was charged with multiple counts of disorderly conduct, fifth-degree criminal mischief, and third-degree harassment again.
The incident visibly upset many of the female students present, causing a significant disruption. They reported feeling exhausted and threatened, especially as all members present were women.
The University of Iowa has stated that students must follow specific conduct standards but did not reveal whether Calhoun would face any disciplinary action. A spokesperson emphasized the university’s commitment to free speech, alongside expectations for students to tolerate differing perspectives.
It’s an ongoing situation, and the university has not yet responded to inquiries regarding Calhoun’s earlier conflict with YAF.
