Plot to assassinate Israel's ambassador to Mexico foiled in Iran

Officials announced on Friday that a plot by Iran to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico has been successfully thwarted.

According to reports, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was planning this act since late last year, but the attempt has been stopped. A U.S. official shared this information with Reuters.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to Mexican security and law enforcement agencies for their role in disrupting the Iranian-led terrorist network targeting the ambassador. They stated, “Israel’s security and intelligence services, in cooperation with agencies worldwide, will continue to work diligently to counteract the threats posed by Iran and its proxies against Israelis and Jews globally.”

A U.S. official indicated that the threat to Ambassador Einat Krantz Nyger has been eliminated, noting that this incident is part of a troubling pattern in Iran’s history of targeting diplomats, journalists, and dissenters.

Details about the planned attack remain unclear at this time.

Last year, British and Swedish security officials voiced concerns that Iran might utilize criminal proxies for such operations. Reports also claim that Britain has successfully foiled about 20 Iranian-related plots since 2022.
