Jon Stewart: 'I believe the Democrats are still in disarray'

Jon Stewart on Democratic Party’s Future After Elections

Comedian Jon Stewart shared his thoughts on the Democratic Party’s current standing following the recent elections, noting that while Democrats saw some significant wins, he still perceives the party as “unpopular” and “in disarray.”

In a recent episode of his podcast, “The Weekly Show,” Stewart spoke with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes and David Plouffe from Pod Save America. He expressed his confusion over the party’s direction, saying, “I believe the Democratic Party is still a mess.” He went on to reflect on the potential energy in the U.S., suggesting that harnessing it poses a challenge.

Stewart commended California for passing Proposition 50, which allowed for redistricting, but he questioned how Democrats might squander or become frustrated by their recent successes. Hayes chimed in, attributing the victories to the unpopularity of former President Trump and noting a historical trend where the opposing party tends to fare better in off-year elections.

He elaborated that the initial factors leading to victory haven’t been effectively utilized by the Democrats. However, he pointed out that candidate recruitment, messaging, and campaigning are aspects where Democrats could potentially improve and exert more control.

Plouffe remarked that the political environment heading into the 2026 midterm elections is favorable for Democrats, but emphasized the importance of candidate quality. He highlighted the significance of effectively criticizing Republican opponents as part of their strategy.

The Democrats’ recent wins, including gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, the New York City mayoralty, and new congressional redistricting in California, have boosted party lawmakers’ confidence amidst ongoing disagreements over a government shutdown.

Trump commented on these losses, mentioning the government shutdown might have contributed to the Republicans’ setbacks. He noted that the electoral outcomes were unexpected in a predominantly Democratic area, indicating that while it was an enlightening night, it may not have been beneficial for the GOP.
