Mamdani’s resentful speech after winning: Letters

Mamdani's resentful speech after winning: Letters

The issue: Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani’s candid victory speech did not resonate with all voters.

Michael Goodwin described Zoran Mamdani’s speech accurately as a “scathing winner” moment—an irritating and spiteful outburst from someone who seems ungrateful and spoiled (“I Finally See Mom Behind the Smile,” Nov. 6).

It almost feels like he cannot think beyond his ideology, and, at times, he demonstrates a lack of basic political courtesy.

Mamdani’s win signifies a troubling time for New York City and, arguably, the nation. This resonates particularly with those who connect to Jewish philosopher Emil Fackenheim’s principle that Hitler should never have a posthumous victory.

Winners like Mamdani are changing the narrative in their speeches: President Trump becomes a focal point, as if he’s the adversary to confront.

Sounds unifying, right? Yet, it feels more like a farewell to New York.

The report noted that Mamdani quickly took on a negative stance towards his opponents following his election.

Have we forgotten that President Trump also included negative remarks about the previous administration in his inauguration?

If anyone expected a different tone or focus from Mamdani regarding his vision for New York City, his victory speech was a real eye-opener.

Mr. Mamdani sidestepped any unifying messages for those who didn’t support him, opting instead for classic rhetoric that sounded almost communistic, emphasizing class issues and free services without clear funding explanations.

He didn’t offer any reassurances to those threatening to leave if he were elected, and his comments regarding America’s large Jewish population, now facing surging anti-Semitism, were alarmingly sparse.

Goodwin’s assertion that Mamdani revealed his true self is misguided; his genuine nature was evident all along. I’ve repeatedly warned that this individual is toxic, but many seemed to overlook the signs.

Sadly, both those who’ve recognized the danger and the unsuspecting voters who supported him will bear the consequences.

Thank you, New York City. The choice to elect someone like Zoran Mamdani has set the stage for some real drama across the country.

As he tries to live up to his promises, we may very well witness the unraveling of your great city.

Topic: Tucker Carlson invites white supremacist Nick Fuentes to “The Tucker Carlson Show.”

Fox News did a favor by removing Tucker Carlson from the air in 2023 (“Tucker and the Toad,” Rich Lowry, November 4).

After his departure from cable, Carlson shifted to podcasting, spiraling into a realm filled with paranoid conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic rhetoric by featuring characters like Nick Fuentes and Candace Owens.

There were warning signs as Carlson’s trajectory fell, particularly when he hosted Kanye West on Fox News, an incident that raised red flags regarding his mental health and anti-Semitism.

Maybe he took this route to differentiate himself in the crowded podcasting scene.

I suspected that Tucker Carlson’s offbeat laugh hinted at some underlying issues, but his hostile approach towards alt-right neo-Nazis like Nick Fuentes backs up those concerns.

Carlson has become a troubling figure in the conservative landscape. His pretense of being a “free speech advocate” seems more like an intellectual toxin.
