Detroit Homecoming for Rookie Noah Laba
DETROIT — Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, Noah Laba often found himself at Red Wings games in the old Joe Louis Arena. On Friday night, he achieved a memorable milestone when he scored the winning goal against that very team, with over 30 family and friends cheering him on at Little Caesars Arena. The Rangers triumphed with a 4-1 victory, making this homecoming even sweeter.
This game was special for multiple reasons, not just for Laba. The Rangers notched their fourth win this season by scoring four or more goals, demonstrating strong dominance throughout the match. They secured two goals in the third period, which helped them pull away further.
Key players found their rhythm again, adding to the overall confidence of the team. Artemi Panarin, who recently cut his curls, shook off a six-game scoring drought, netting a critical goal. Meanwhile, Alexis Lafreniere scored for the first time in 12 games, bringing his total to two goals this season.
Goaltender Jonathan Quick showcased his skills by making 32 saves, earning his third consecutive win. The Rangers, still seeking their first win at Madison Square Garden after six games, managed to pull off a needed victory.
With three goals and two assists in the first 15 games, Laba has become a prominent figure in the Rangers’ lineup. His growing comfort and confidence with the puck have led head coach Mike Sullivan to grant him more ice time and responsibilities on special teams.
With Vincent Trocheck sidelined for an extended period due to an upper-body injury, Laba’s emergence has been crucial for the team. The Rangers have certainly appreciated his ability to fill the gap left by Trocheck.
Despite the Rangers’ power play struggles, which included going 0-for-12 in the last five games, they managed to get on the board early with just their fifth goal in the season’s power play.
After being elevated to the first power-play unit during practice, Will Quill converted a play setup by Mika Zibanejad to score his third goal of the season. However, the Red Wings quickly responded, with JT Compher scoring just minutes later to level the game at 1-1.
The Rangers still dominated the first period in terms of quality chances. Natural Stat Trick noted they led 5-1 in dangerous opportunities through the first 20 minutes.
As the second power play came to a close, Panarin located Lafreniere at the back post, who then assisted Laba for another goal, restoring the lead for the Rangers. In the third period, Panarin added a goal of his own, solidifying the team’s advantage against former Ranger Cam Talbot. Lafreniere rounded off the scoring with a clever finish, sealing the game at 4-1.
