Nets Struggle After Initial Win
After halting their seven-game losing streak with a victory over Indiana, the Nets found themselves falling back into old habits during their first NBA Cup game on Friday. They suffered a 125-107 defeat against the Pistons, a setback after what had been a brief moment of optimism.
With just one win to show for their efforts this season (1-8) and still without a home victory (0-5), Brooklyn is set to face the Knicks at Madison Square Garden this Sunday.
The Nets started strong, leading by 10 points early, but quickly waned. Their defense, notably the worst in the league, was a significant factor in the loss, allowing the Pistons (7-2) to shoot nearly 60 percent from the field. Even more concerning was their inability to defend the paint, where Detroit scored an impressive 78 points.
Brooklyn’s inside defense resembled a textbook example of poor execution—almost laughable at times—as Pistons players executed an uninterrupted series of electrifying dunks.
Cade Cunningham shined with 34 points and 10 assists, dazzling the crowd with a windmill dunk. Meanwhile, Jaylen Duren amassed 30 points and 11 rebounds, making his own mark with powerful plays.
While Michael Porter Jr. led his team with 28 points, it was Noah Clowney who surprised everyone with 19 points, including a quick 12 points in the initial minutes of the game. Clowney had been struggling, averaging just 4.3 points a game with a shooting percentage below 24 before this week, but has found his groove lately.
Detroit, maintaining a winning streak of five games—the best in the Eastern Conference—held a slim 60-55 lead at halftime. They then went on a strong 12-2 run to start the third quarter, establishing a commanding 94-74 lead by the end of that frame, ultimately leading by as much as 24 points.
This wasn’t just a game for Detroit; it was a show of resilience. They faced a long dry spell in the playoffs, having not won for 17 years and suffering through nine seasons without a winning record. However, they broke through last season with 44 wins, culminating in a thrilling playoff series against the Knicks.
The Nets, on the other hand, have a long road ahead. They might achieve success eventually, but performances like these give little reason for optimism in the near term.
