JuJu Watkins Makes Waves Off the Court
Even though JuJu Watkins isn’t hitting the basketball court this season, she’s certainly making headlines away from it. The standout junior guard from USC is sidelined due to an ACL tear suffered during last season’s NCAA Tournament, but she’s found a way to keep busy.
Recently, it was announced that Watkins has joined the ownership group of Boston Legacy FC, a new team in the National Women’s Soccer League. This decision highlights her savvy use of NIL earnings and investment potential.
In fact, this investment is pretty groundbreaking. She’s reportedly the first athlete to invest in a women’s professional sports team while still in college, a fact that Sportico noted. This sets an exciting precedent for future collegiate athletes.
“JuJu’s investment marks a landmark moment for women’s sports and the power of the NIL,” stated Jennifer Epstein, the owner of Boston Legacy, in an interview with ESPN. “She’s a clear example that today’s student-athletes are not just looking to build their brands; they’re actually shaping the future of sports.” This certainly speaks volumes about where athletics are heading.
Watkins is now in esteemed company with other well-known investors in Boston Legacy FC, including actress Elizabeth Banks and Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman. There’s also Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, and Boston Celtics general manager Brad Stevens. The team is set to begin play in 2026.
“Boston Legacy FC is creating space for women to achieve, lead, and inspire,” Watkins expressed in a statement. “I’m excited to be part of a movement that pushes women’s sports forward.” It sounds like she truly believes in this cause.
Last season, Watkins showcased her incredible skills, averaging an impressive 23.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, earning National Player of the Year honors. She contributed significantly to USC’s Big Ten title and secured a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The 20-year-old, standing at 6-foot-2, earned accolades including the Wooden, Naismith, and AP Player of the Year honors, and she was recognized as an All-American for the second year in a row.
Known as one of the rising stars in women’s college basketball, Watkins has secured NIL deals with various brands like AT&T, Celsius, and Nike. She’s also made a mark as an investor in the women’s professional basketball league, Unrivaled, and has a NIL contract.
Looking ahead, Watkins is set to return for USC’s 2026-27 season, and after that, she has another year of eligibility. However, with her 22nd birthday approaching in 2027, she’ll also be eligible for that year’s WNBA Draft, which adds a layer of anticipation for her future.
