Packers' Micah Parsons remembers former teammate Marshawn Kneeland

Tribute to Marshawn Kneeland by Micah Parsons

This week, Micah Parsons, a prominent player for the Green Bay Packers, took time to honor his former teammate Marshawn Kneeland, who sadly lost his life due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Kneeland was just 24 years old.

Following a police chase in Texas, Kneeland’s death was confirmed. Parsons expressed deep respect for him, reminiscing about their time together. “Marshawn was into anime and video games like so many of us,” he mentioned. He recalled how Kneeland treated him with nothing but respect from the moment they met. “If his family ever needs help, I’m ready to provide whatever support I can,” Parsons added, hoping for peace for Kneeland’s loved ones.

Parsons touched on the immense pressure that athletes face, highlighting the mental health challenges that can accompany such intense scrutiny. “It’d be naive to think our jobs aren’t stressful,” he stated. “Expectations are high, and when performance falters, the criticism can be harsh. It’s tough out there.” He emphasized the need for understanding and support among peers in their demanding environment.

He reflected on how athletes often don the mask of professionalism while experiencing deep personal struggles. “We often forget the weight of our words,” he said. “It’s important to check in with one another, regardless of our circumstances.” The emotional toll of the job, he acknowledged, sometimes overshadows the human side of being an athlete.

Parsons pointed out that some former teammates of Kneeland are profoundly affected by this loss, as it’s more than just a teammate—it’s like losing a brother. The bond in the NFL, he elaborated, becomes incredibly tight through shared experiences, both good and bad.

Kneeland had recently achieved a career milestone, scoring his first NFL touchdown just days before his passing. Selected 56th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, he was in his second season with the team. His tragic death is a stark reminder of the unseen struggles many athletes face.
