Billy Bob Thornton Critiques Celebrity Politics at Award Shows

Billy Bob Thornton recently voiced his thoughts on celebrities who inject politics into award ceremonies during a conversation on The Joe Rogan Experience. The 70-year-old actor shared that awards have lost their meaning for him, noting, “I don’t care about awards anymore.” He remarked on the many accolades he’s received, most of which were earned when they still held genuine significance.

Thornton mentioned, “I’ve won a few lately,” but now feels indifferent, observing, “I’ll go over here and eat dry chicken breast and green beans and hear people come in and rant about how great they are.” He feels that true honor in winning should lead to appropriate tributes for those who contributed to the achievement, rather than using it as a platform to promote personal causes.

In a related event, Emmy Awards host Nate Bargatze echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing, “There’s a time and a place for that,” and suggesting that award shows should stick to celebrating achievements. He humorously discouraged politically motivated speeches, saying, “Don’t go out there and talk about saving the badgers in Wisconsin or something.” Bargatze argued that those with significant resources have the means to address issues without needing the spotlight of an award ceremony.

Joe Rogan supported this view, describing it as a means for some to showcase their compassion without real commitment. He mentioned that this superficial display was akin to saying how much one cares about far-off issues to garner a certain image.

Reflecting on his own career, Thornton gained widespread recognition through his work on the film Sling Blade, which he wrote, directed, and starred in. That film not only won him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay but also earned him a nomination for Best Actor.

Looking back on his achievements, he expressed gratitude for finding success later in life. “If I had been nominated for an Academy Award when I was 21, who knows what I would have done with it?” he pondered, acknowledging that a younger version of himself might not have handled it wisely.

Currently, Thornton stars alongside Demi Moore in the Paramount+ series, Landman, portraying Tommy Norris, an oil executive determined to lead the industry. The actor seems to appreciate having had time to grow into his role rather than facing fame too early in his life.
