President Trump to Reinstate Presidential Physical Fitness Test

President Donald Trump is set to sign a memorandum on Tuesday to revive the Presidential Physical Fitness Test Award, a competitive fitness program for schools that was discontinued during the Obama presidency, according to the White House.

The event will include members from the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, as well as the board of the National Fitness Foundation. Notable figures in attendance are expected to be golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Gary Player, along with NFL player Amani Oruwariye and MLB pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

This initiative reinstates performance-based standards for student fitness and aligns with Trump’s broader “Make America Healthy Again” efforts. Last year, Trump had already signed an executive order to bring back the Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, and this new memorandum will facilitate the implementation of the fitness test across schools nationwide.

Details of the Program

A copy of the National Physical Fitness Award reveals that the reinstated program will focus on measurable athletic performance, drawing on the traditional model that ranked students based on their physical abilities.

The original Presidential Fitness Test was phased out during Obama’s second term and replaced with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, part of the “Let’s Move” initiative. Critics argued that the test emphasized competition too heavily, potentially discouraging students who may not excel athletically.

The President’s Council on Youth Fitness began under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, prompted by findings that American children were less physically fit than their European peers. Schools started conducting fitness tests during John F. Kennedy’s administration, leading to the creation of the first President’s Physical Fitness Council.

Context and Statistics

The Obama-era program was geared mainly toward gauging the health and fitness levels of American youth. Currently, statistics from the CDC indicate that over 21% of Americans aged 2 to 19 were classified as obese between 2021 and 2023, with around 7% categorized as severely obese.

Trump’s memorandum is set to be signed in the Oval Office, with a subsequent event on the South Lawn aimed at celebrating National Youth Sports and Fitness Month. Cabinet members like Pete Hegseth, Robert Kennedy Jr., Scott Turner, and Linda McMahon are also scheduled to attend.
