The recent government shutdown stretched for 38 days, marking it as the longest in U.S. history, outpacing the one that happened during President Trump’s first term.
Currently, lawmakers in Washington are at an impasse over a continuing resolution (CR) created by the House, with Senate Democrats voting against it multiple times. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) stated that the Senate would stay in session until an agreement is reached.
Due to Senate filibuster rules, which necessitate 60 votes to pass a bill, the minority party has blocked the CR while wanting to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium subsidies for an additional year.
Republican senators argue that this matter should be sidelined until the government reopens, suggesting Congress hold its position until either side makes a move. While Thune has his reservations about this notion, President Trump is urging party members to end the filibuster.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the need to “blow up” the filibuster, claiming that doing so would lead to voter ID approval and other long-desired policies. He stated, “Only losers would disagree with this!”
Amidst the deadlock, Republicans are brainstorming various strategies to resolve the situation, including a bill from Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) aimed at addressing rising healthcare costs.
Graham is set to appear on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” to share updates on his negotiation efforts in the Senate.
Additionally, Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is expected to voice his opinions during the same show.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) will also feature on “Fox News Sunday,” where he could discuss the dynamics within the Republican conference. Polls indicate that many Americans are blaming Republicans for the shutdown. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York may address the Democratic stance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
The timeline for distributing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds is currently uncertain, as the Supreme Court has halted a lower court ruling that required the Trump administration to issue full payments for November amid the ongoing funding deadlock.
Travelers are also feeling the effects of the shutdown, with significant flight delays and cancellations occurring due to air traffic controllers reporting in after weeks without pay. Over 1,000 flights were canceled across the U.S. as of Friday morning, as the FAA and airlines work to tackle staffing shortages worsened by the shutdown.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy may discuss the air travel situation on “Fox News Sunday” and CNN’s “State of the Union.” The FAA recently announced a preliminary 4% reduction in flights at 40 major airports. If the shutdown stretches into November 14, this reduction could increase to 10%.
As the shutdown lingers, voters are celebrating recent electoral wins in various states like New York, New Jersey, and Virginia. Democratic candidates such as New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, and Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger emerged victorious. Both newly elected governors are anticipated to appear on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
Exit polls have revealed that affordability was a major concern for voters. Ken Martin, chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), is slated to appear on “Fox News Sunday,” expressing optimism for further gains as next year’s midterms approach.
In his write-up, Martin stated, “When I ran for Speaker, I promised to engage the DNC outside of Washington, D.C., and support the individuals and state parties making a difference on the ground. Last night’s victory highlights what our party can achieve when we unite and connect with voters.”
