Exploring Derry: The Actual Filming Sites of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’

IT: Welcome to Delhi

Pennywise, that infamous clown portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, returns in this HBO original series, IT: Welcome to Delhi. This supernatural horror show acts as a prequel to the 2017 film, expanding on the eerie universe first introduced in Stephen King’s 1986 novel.

Taking place in 1962, the story revolves around Major Leroy (Jovan Adepo) and Charlotte Hanlon (Taylor Page), who relocate to Derry, Maine, with their son Will (Blake Cameron James) after Leroy is assigned there by the U.S. Army. Their arrival follows the mysterious disappearance of local boy Matty Clements (Miles Eckhart), an event that might be linked to the resurgence of Pennywise.

The Hanlon family encounters numerous challenges as they adjust to their new surroundings in an unfamiliar town. Meanwhile, local kids—Teddy (Mikal Karim Fiddler), Phil (Jacques Molloy Legault), Lily (Clara Stack), Ronnie (Amanda Christine), and Susie (Matilda Legault)—embark on a quest to find Matty, convinced he’s still out there, calling for help. As the story unfolds, Pennywise begins to wreak havoc once more, creating chaos in Derry.

At this stage, only a handful of episodes have aired, so it’s hard to say much about the series. Still, viewers can certainly anticipate intense narratives, gruesome scenes, and plenty of Pennywise-induced frights ahead. While some plot details remain under wraps, we definitely know that IT: Welcome to Delhi has been filmed.

Filming Locations for IT: Welcome to Delhi

Although the show is set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine—a place inspired by Stephen King’s own hometown of Bangor—the filming didn’t occur in New England or the U.S.

Instead, the production took place across Canada, primarily in Ontario. Filming kicked off in May 2023 in locations like Toronto, Port Hope, and Hamilton. Notably, some of the same locations were used in the earlier films, with parts of Port Hope again portraying various exterior scenes of Derry, especially Walton Street, which features several Derry businesses and homes.

Delta Secondary School in Hamilton was transformed into Derry High School for the series. Although the school ceased operations in 2019, its building has stood since 1925, making it an ideal site for a show set in any decade of the past century. In addition, Delta Middle School was recently featured in the Netflix horror film Fear Street: Prom Queen, which is set in 1988.

Another key filming location was the Canadian Forces Base Borden, which represented the Air Force base in Derry where Major Hanlon is stationed. Additional studio scenes were also shot in Toronto.

Catch all these locations and watch the fictitious city of Delhi unfold as new episodes of IT: Welcome to Delhi premiere every Sunday at 9 PM ET until December 14th.
