Q & A: Stefanik describes her 2026 campaign for governor against Hochul as a crucial fight to protect New York and 'Western Civilization' from socialism

The upcoming 2026 gubernatorial election in New York is shaping up to be a crucial moment, as Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) described it as an “existential battle” for the state and, by extension, Western Civilization against socialism. In a recent interview, she shared insights into her campaign against Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Q: If you were to become governor, would you consider suspending or removing elected officials, like socialist Zoran Mamdani if he were to win mayor?

Answer: If elected, I would adhere to the New York State Constitution, which outlines the necessary procedures. It’s not a matter of ideology; the Constitution is very clear on the process. We’ll evaluate as needed, but it must align with the Constitution.

Q: Given President Trump’s mixed popularity in New York, how do you plan to navigate that, especially in relation to Hochul’s campaign?

Answer: Hochul’s tactics are aimed at mobilizing voters who might not usually participate, which is central to her strategy. She garnered around 3.1 million votes while Trump received approximately 3.6 million in New York. Ultimately, it will come down to voter turnout and how people feel about Hochul. Her name is on the ballot, and oddly enough, she holds less popularity than Trump in the state.

Q: If you win, will you remove the congestion charge in NYC?

Answer: Absolutely, that’s a key aspect of my platform. The commuter tax unfairly burdens working New Yorkers and has a negative impact on the city’s economy.

Q: What prompted you to run for governor at this moment?

Answer: I’m running to rescue New York. The Democrats have held office for two decades, and the consequences are evident. New York ranks as one of the least affordable and safest states in the country. Under Hochul’s governance, we’ve become the highest-taxed state, and she hasn’t tackled issues like soaring energy prices or rising costs of living. New York is increasingly unfriendly toward businesses as well. There’s a tangible frustration among New Yorkers that has motivated me to act. I grew up in upstate New York and get that the state typically leans Democratic, but my journey shows that overcoming odds is possible. I first won a Congressional seat that was thought to be unwinnable, and I built a diverse coalition of supporters.

Q: Can you elaborate on the support you’re receiving for your campaign?

Answer: Hochul is looking at the same polls we are: she likely won’t achieve 50% support from registered Democrats. Her choice to endorse Mamdani has alienated many moderate voters. His recent win in a three-way race, though technically a victory, reflects weak performance for a conventional Democratic candidate in New York City. Hochul’s approval ratings have dropped significantly, and I’ve seen her former supporters pivot to back me. They want a governor who represents common-sense values for all of New York.

Q: Do you believe Mamdani’s statements during his time in office will affect your campaign?

Answer: I genuinely hope for New York City’s success; it’s too important for the state and beyond. But it needs to be a place that is safe and thriving, free from high taxes and unnecessary regulations. Hochul hasn’t condemned Mamdani’s controversial remarks, which many see as reckless. Her silence speaks volumes, especially about issues like defunding the police. People should be cautioned against her promise not to raise taxes as well, as I suspect the far left will influence her decisions.

Q: Do you think Mamdani’s performance might help or hinder your campaign?

Answer: It could definitely be pivotal. We’re holding him accountable, and it’s crucial to show how Hochul’s choices have impacted New York City. If Mamdani falters, it opens the door to demonstrating that there’s a more sensible approach to governance.

Q: You’ve criticized Hochul harshly. Do you see Mamdani in a similar light?

Answer: Yes, I do. Hochul has certainly earned the title of being ineffective. Looking back at her career, she lacks substantial achievements and was considered a placeholder in many roles. Her trajectory from an unknown politician to a widely disliked governor speaks for itself.

Q: What is your take on the recent gubernatorial race in New Jersey, and its implications for New York?

Answer: The circumstances in New Jersey are quite different, as Mikie Sherrill was not an incumbent like Hochul. In contrast, Hochul’s situation is strained. Her governorship is marred by crises largely tied to poor decision-making from her administration.

Q: Are you aiming to reinstate hydraulic fracturing in New York?

Answer: Yes, from day one, I would lift the fracking suspension. It’s essential for achieving energy independence, which in turn addresses our affordability challenges. Hochul’s opposition to fracking and prohibiting gas stoves has exacerbated the crisis.

Q: How do you plan to tackle the cost of living, which many say is critical for voters?

Answer: First, I will focus on cutting taxes. Hochul has consistently raised them, which is the opposite of what New Yorkers need. I have a proven record of negotiating significant tax cuts, and that will be evident when voters file their taxes this coming year. Tackling energy costs will also be key. We need competitive energy prices and to eliminate unnecessary regulations that burden small businesses.

Q: What do you think is lacking in Hochul’s leadership?

Answer: It’s all about results. I’ve been successful in my roles and have gained a reputation for being effective across party lines. In my time in Congress, my focus has been on lowering costs for families and creating safe communities. Hochul, on the other hand, has mainly aligned herself with Democratic interests, and I bring a wider perspective from my experience in both parties.
