Officer Killed in North Carolina Emergency Room Shooting
A police officer lost his life in a North Carolina emergency room on Saturday morning. WakeMed officials confirmed that Officer Roger Smith of the campus police was shot at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex around 9 a.m., and they expressed their deep sorrow over his passing.
The incident occurred while officer Smith was on duty in the emergency department lobby, where a struggle unfolded. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries, according to a hospital statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Smith family as they cope with this tragic event,” the statement remarked.
Hours later, the Garner Police Department reported the arrest of 29-year-old Benji Martin Jr., who has been charged with murder.
Hospital officials commended the emergency department staff for their “heroic and quick response” during the situation. The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation, along with the Garner Police Department, is in charge of the investigation, which is standard procedure for police-involved shootings.
“The WakeMed family is coming together to respond to and process this heartbreaking event,” the statement concluded, adding that extra staff and counselors are available to support the Garner Education Department and Campus Police teams.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein shared his condolences for Officer Smith on social media, stating that officers often put themselves in harm’s way for the safety of others, and he expressed gratitude for Officer Smith’s sacrifice. He encouraged prayers for Smith’s family and the WakeMed community during this difficult time.
The FBI’s Charlotte field office also conveyed its “deepest condolences” to law enforcement partners mourning Smith’s death.
“This was a heartbreaking and senseless act of violence,” noted Garner Police Chief Adams in a statement. He highlighted Smith’s commitment to protecting others, emphasizing that even in his last moments, he prioritized the safety of those around him. The community of Garner stands in solidarity during this period of mourning for Smith and the wider WakeMed staff.
