Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby finding harmony with the Knicks' defense

After a year of playing together, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby are feeling more secure in their chemistry on the court.

The decision to trade Bridges while giving Anunoby a significant contract extension last off-season aimed to solidify their roles as formidable wing defenders.

But, that wasn’t quite achieved last year.

On a brighter note, the two have kicked off this season with a strong performance.

“I think we have a good synergy,” Bridges mentioned following practice on Saturday. “We’re really trying to play the right way, making the right plays and being aggressive. With us, it’s like we’re starting to figure each other out. It just takes time and, I guess, a lot of repetition. The connection off the court helps, but it’s all about getting those game reps in. I’m starting to see that pay off for both of us.”

It’s unusual for teams to practice for consecutive days during the season.

The Knicks had three days off after their last game on Wednesday, gearing up for their Sunday encounter with the Nets at Madison Square Garden. Coach Mike Brown had given them Thursday off, then scheduled practices on Friday and Saturday.

“Usually, practice time is limited, so you want to maximize it,” said Brown on Saturday. “We still have many details to work out and we’re gradually introducing new elements. We didn’t have much time during the preseason, so we focused on fundamental plays to help everyone understand how to approach the game effectively on both sides of the court.”

This matchup will mark the fifth meeting between the Knicks and Nets since Bridges’ trade.

Last season, the Knicks managed to win all four of their previous games against the Nets.

“Every time I step on the court, I think about how dramatically my life has shifted since my time in Phoenix,” Bridges reflected. “Transitioning from Phoenix to Brooklyn was significant. I enjoyed my time with the Nets, even though last year was tough with losing streaks. I really value the relationships I built, especially with the younger players and rookies. Those connections matter a lot, and I’m grateful to everyone there who contributed to my journey.”
