Iran’s Support for Hezbollah Persists Despite Sanctions

The Iranian government has reportedly smuggled over $1 billion to Hezbollah this year, despite facing strict sanctions, as disclosed by high-ranking officials from the U.S. Treasury Department.

John Hurley, the Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, noted that Iran is still working with its proxies across the Middle East. He also mentioned that there’s a potential opportunity to disrupt these funds while Iran is presently in a weakened position.

“There’s a critical moment happening in Lebanon right now. If we can persuade Hezbollah to disarm, then the Lebanese people have a chance to reclaim their country,” Hurley remarked.

Interestingly, he pointed out that, despite Iran’s economic troubles, it continues to direct significant resources to its terrorist affiliates.

“The essential objective is to eliminate Iranian influence, beginning with the financial support flowing into Hezbollah,” he explained.

Hurley recently visited Turkey, Lebanon, the UAE, and Israel to advocate for intensified pressure against Iran.

Western nations have already enacted tough sanctions on Iran because of its hesitance to engage in negotiations regarding its nuclear activities, with the Iranian government asserting that its nuclear program serves solely civilian interests.

Amid all this, President Trump had earlier commanded airstrikes on Iran’s primary nuclear sites in a move known as Operation Midnight Hammer, which officials say successfully disrupted Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

However, Iran seems unfazed and continues its campaigns to incite disorder globally. Just earlier this year, U.S. officials, alongside their Israeli and Mexican counterparts, intercepted an Iranian-backed plot to assassinate the Israeli ambassador in Mexico.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude to Mexican law enforcement for thwarting this Iranian-led terrorist initiative aimed at targeting their ambassador.

“Israel’s security and intelligence entities, cooperating closely with global counterparts, remain committed to countering the terrorist threats posed by Iran and its affiliates, which specifically target Israel and the Jewish population,” they stated.

A U.S. official informed Reuters that the threat targeting Ambassador Einat Krantz Nager has been nullified and no longer poses any risk.
