Prince William talks about the challenge of explaining Kate Middleton's cancer to their children

Prince William recently discussed the challenge of informing his children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—about Duchess Kate’s battle with cancer, describing it as a “balancing act.”

In an interview with Brazilian TV host Luciano Huck during his Earthshot Award trip, he reflected on the experience. “How you handle these matters is quite personal and really depends on the moment,” he explained.

William and Kate, both 43, shared their decision to communicate openly with their children about “good news and bad news.” The prince noted that while there are benefits to this honesty, he sometimes worries he reveals too much. “I probably share things I shouldn’t,” he admitted.

However, he believes that concealing details often leads to more questions from the kids. “Most of the time, keeping things from them isn’t effective,” he added, emphasizing that knowing “everything” can help reduce young children’s anxieties.

William noted that navigating these discussions requires instinct, as there isn’t a definitive guide to parenthood. “It’s always a balancing act. Every parent knows that: how much to say, what to say, and when,” he said. “You just go with your instincts.” The couple aimed to share everything to alleviate their children’s worries.

Duchess Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, shortly after stepping away from royal duties due to surgery. She explained her approach to telling their kids, focusing on a healing journey. “By engaging in activities that nurture my mind, body, and spirit, I’m improving every day.”

Kate expressed that she took her time to process her diagnosis with her family before making it public. After an extensive treatment process, she later announced in January that she was in remission and adapting to her “new normal.”
