Syrian President Meets with US Military Leaders Before White House Visit

Syrian President Engages with US Military Officials

Syrian President Ahmed al-Shalah was spotted playing basketball with senior US military figures, including Admiral Brad Cooper and Brigadier General Kevin Lambert. This moment was shared in a video on Saturday by Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani.

President Donald Trump is set to welcome Al-Shalah to the White House on Monday. Al Shaibani shared a video on Instagram where the three were seen making baskets. “Work harder and play more 🏀,” he remarked in his post. He added, “We’re making some plays on the court with Admiral Brad Cooper and Brigadier General Kevin Lambert.”

This visit marks a significant moment, as it will be the first time a Syrian head of state has been to the White House since Syria gained independence in 1946, according to NPR.

In a previous speech made in Saudi Arabia, President Trump announced plans to lift sanctions against Syria. He stated, “In order to give Syria a great chance, I am going to order the suspension of sanctions against Syria… The sanctions were brutal and devastating. Nevertheless, now is their time to shine.”

Al-Shalah previously led the Islamic fundamentalist extremist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which played a role in toppling former president Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. He has gained a reputation as a more pro-Western leader compared to Assad, with some calling his government “moderate.” Interestingly, Al-Shalah was once associated with al-Qaeda.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed this visit during a briefing, emphasizing that it fits into the president’s broader diplomatic efforts to engage with global leaders seeking peace.
