Controversial Meme Leads to Teacher’s Name Removal in Virginia School District
The Danville Public Schools District in Virginia has seemingly omitted the name of a transgender teacher from George Washington High School amid backlash over a controversial meme.
Dr. Sabrina Morris, who taught government and history, reportedly shared a meme that was interpreted as a threat of violence related to pronouns. It is said that she took time off recently.
Interestingly, Morris had set her personal Instagram account to private, which listed her pronouns as female.
The offending meme depicted a hand holding a gun to a person’s back, accompanied by the message, “Please change pronouns back to email.” The hand was rainbow-colored, symbolizing support for the LGBTQ community. Morris purportedly shared this meme on social media.
The school district has issued a statement, yet details regarding the consequences Morris may face remain sparse.
A spokesperson for the district noted, “We are aware that recent social media posts involving one of our staff members have caused concern within our school community. We take such matters very seriously, as the content shared does not reflect the values and expectations of professionalism that guide our department.”
They further added, “Danville Public Schools is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all students and staff. This is treated as a personnel matter, so we cannot disclose further information at this time.”
Morris’ name was present among the social studies teachers on the school website until September 6, but it has since been removed.
Additionally, Morris’ teacher profile, which allegedly indicated her affiliation with the LGBTQ+ community, has also been taken down from the site.
The meme gained traction after being highlighted by a popular TikTok account and was featured on Greg Gutfeld’s show on Fox News.
In a related comment, former U.S. Attorney John Fishwick remarked, “People should understand that everything they post on social media is public. If it impacts your job, most significant employers would likely feel justified in scrutinizing whether you’re damaging their brand.”
