Alex Singleton’s Health Update Following Surgery
Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton has shared how the NFL’s random drug tests played a crucial role in his early detection of testicular cancer. In a public statement released on Monday, he disclosed that he had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, just a day after the Broncos secured a victory against the Raiders on Thursday Night Football.
“Fortunately, the cancer was discovered early and I think the outlook is positive for me and my family,” Singleton mentioned. He added, “While we are still waiting on more test results, we expect to return to the field in a few weeks.”
On Monday, Singleton informed his teammates about his diagnosis and surgery. The 31-year-old attributed the diagnosis to a mandated NFL drug test, which revealed elevated levels of the hormone hCG—a point he felt was significant due to his being diligent about his health choices, noting this issue was not environmental.
“I visited Dr. Andrew Gilaby, who identified signs of testicular cancer. After consulting with the Broncos, I was quickly scheduled for an ultrasound by Dr. Jeff Ledgerwood to confirm the diagnosis,” he explained. “The day after the game against the Raiders, I underwent surgery to remove the tumor and am now on the path to recovery.”
Singleton is keen on spreading awareness about early detection and the importance of regular check-ups, stating that he hopes sharing his story will help others. He mentioned that only a few teammates were aware of his situation, despite having made nine tackles in the recent game.
Currently in his fourth season with the Broncos, he will miss the next match against the Chiefs but anticipates a quick return. Singleton noted, “I can’t specify an exact recovery timeline yet, but I expect to bounce back reasonably fast after this less invasive surgery. I’m hopeful it won’t take longer than four to six weeks.”
So far this season, Singleton has played in all ten games for the Broncos, registering 89 tackles, contributing to the team’s current leading position in the AFC West with eight wins against two losses.
