Dave Portnoy Addresses Rising Anti-Semitism
Dave Portnoy, the president of Barstool Sports, recently shared his concerns regarding a noticeable rise in anti-Semitism during an interview with CBS News. He mentioned that he experiences hate on “a daily basis” now, which he finds quite alarming.
In a preview of an upcoming segment on CBS Sunday Morning, Portnoy discussed with co-host Tony Dokoupil how the climate seems to have shifted. He expressed that there appears to be an increase in disrespect directed towards Jewish individuals, a stark contrast to the occasional cruel remarks he received in years past. “Just being a Barstool guy has changed the amount of hate I get,” he remarked. “It’s now more frequent. There’s a clear change happening.”
Portnoy added that, for those in the Jewish community, it’s important to take a stand. “We have to recognize that this isn’t normal and find ways to come together and laugh, despite the hatred that exists out there,” he stated.
After the interview, a person hurled an anti-Semitic remark at Portnoy during a pizza review. This situation wasn’t isolated; a similar event occurred back in June while he was filming in Toronto. In both instances, exclamations of “Jews!” were directed at him, highlighting the ongoing issue.
Another alarming incident unfolded in May when a sign reading “Jews” was found at one of Barstool’s venues in Philadelphia. Portnoy seemed frustrated by these recurring challenges. At one point, he expressed a desire to confront those spreading hate, considering the importance of education regarding the Holocaust.
While his moments of anger were understandable, it’s remarkable to see how openly he discusses these challenges, pointing out that something needs to change and urging communal action against intolerance.
