Trump’s 50-Year Mortgage Plan Met with Mixed Reactions
During a late Monday interview on Fox News, President Trump downplayed worries from his supporters regarding his proposed 50-year mortgage plan.
“It’s no big deal,” he stated on “The Ingraham Angle.” He elaborated, “So going from 40 to 50 means you pay less. Some people were 30 to 40 and are now 50.”
According to Trump, the main takeaway is that monthly payments would be lower, though the loan period would extend. “That’s not a huge factor. It might help a little bit,” he said.
Trump initially posted about this plan on Truth Social over the weekend, sharing an image that featured him alongside former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The graphic highlighted “30 Year Mortgage” above Roosevelt and “50 Year Mortgage” above Trump.
Federal Housing Finance Agency Commissioner Bill Pulte also provided a statement in response to Trump’s post on the social platform.
However, the details of Trump’s proposal have faced pushback from his conservative MAGA supporters. FOX Business anchor Charles Payne expressed his disapproval on Monday, pointing out, “Depending on the price of the home, at 4% interest over 30 years, that’s $2,300, and over 50 years it’s $1,900. So that’s almost $500 a month in affordability savings.” He further noted, “But by the time you’re done paying off these bad guys, you’re paying close to $700,000 in 50 years versus $359,000 in 30 years. Just making people feel better makes a tremendous difference.”
He concluded that there are better alternatives to tackle housing costs.
This proposal emerges as both political parties are aiming to focus more on affordability, especially after last week’s Democratic victories in year-end elections centered around that issue.
In his interview, Trump also placed blame on former President Biden and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell for the ongoing affordability challenges in housing, saying, “The problem is that Biden did it. He raised interest rates. And fortunately, I have a terrible person at the Fed who will be gone in a few months.”
