Cowboys hold an 'emotional' gathering to discuss Marshawn Kneeland's passing

Emotional Day for Cowboys After Loss of Marshawn Kneeland

The Dallas Cowboys had a deeply emotional gathering on Monday, as they came together for the first time since the heartbreaking loss of Marshawn Kneeland, who tragically died by suicide last week at just 24 years old.

First-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer provided players with a supportive environment to share their feelings and experiences as the team navigates this challenging time. According to the Cowboys’ website, this approach has been crucial for team unity.

Defensive end Solomon Thomas remarked, “I’m really proud of how our coaches handled things today. They brought in therapists and allowed everyone to express their emotions. We had a safe space to be open about what we were feeling.” He described the meeting as “very impactful and emotional.”

“I had never been in a program where anything like this happened before. It’s a clear sign of Schottenheimer’s care for us. We needed a day to just be human, to cry, and to share our thoughts. It was truly difficult and exhausting, especially for those who loved Marshawn. This was a meaningful way to honor him,” Thomas added.

Tragically, Kneeland passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a police incident, as reported by Frisco Police.

The Cowboys expressed their sorrow in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Marshawn Kneeland. He was a cherished teammate and part of our family. Our thoughts are with his girlfriend, Katarina, and his family.”

Kneeland’s death followed shortly after a significant moment in his career when he returned a blocked punt for a touchdown during a game against the Cardinals on November 3, 2025.

Thomas, who joined the Cowboys this offseason after playing three years with the Jets, shared how Kneeland’s death resonates personally for him, especially as he lost his sister to suicide in 2018. “It’s hard, especially with all the emotions tied to my sister’s loss. But I feel a responsibility to be here for my teammates, to show them that there’s help and love available, that we can get through this together,” he reflected.

As the team prepares to return to the field after their bye week, Thomas and his teammates are making an effort to keep Kneeland’s spirit alive. “It leaves you questioning the importance of football in the midst of such pain and tragedy,” he noted.

“One way we want to honor Marshawn is by celebrating how much he loved football and how hard he played. He always had a smile on his face, both on and off the field,” Thomas continued, expressing their desire to embody his positive traits in both their gameplay and daily lives.

The NFL also paid tribute to Kneeland, calling for a moment of silence during games on Sunday. The Broncos honored him before their kickoff against the Raiders, the same day Kneeland passed away.

The Cowboys (3-5-1) are set to face the Raiders (2-7) next Monday night.
