Ted Turner, the billionaire who founded CNN, has passed away at 87, as reported by CNN on Wednesday.
Here are some reactions to his death.
Donald Trump
On Truth Social, the former president remarked, “Ted Turner, one of the all-time greats, has passed away. He founded CNN, sold it, and was deeply saddened by the way the new owner handled it. CNN, his ‘baby,’ changed in ways that I think he wouldn’t have liked. Maybe a new group will bring it back to its past glory. Regardless, he was a major figure in broadcasting and a friend. He was always there for me when I needed him to fight for what was right!”
Walter Isaacson
At the Sir Harry Evans Investigative Reporting Summit in London, Isaacson referred to Turner as “the most fearless journalist I have ever seen.” He noted Turner’s boldness in facing corporate pressures and political influences. “I remember how he was somewhat sidelined after the Twin Towers attack because Time Warner didn’t want him to become too involved. But he didn’t let that stop him; he rallied us by saying, ‘Journalism is made for times like this,'” Isaacson recalled.
Ric Flair
“I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of the great Ted Turner! He made cable television what it is today! CNN was his creation, and look how it evolved. He was not afraid to take risks, whether in sailing or his ventures in wrestling, where he opened doors for so many. His office was a testament to his remarkable life, showcasing photos that told countless stories,” Flair expressed.
Mark Thompson
“Ted has been a foundation for CNN and will always be remembered as such,” stated CNN Worldwide’s chairman and CEO. “He was an immense figure, and we continue to benefit from his legacy.”
Christiane Amanpour
“Ted Turner was a giant in every sense of the word,” shared CNN’s chief international anchor. “He had a way of telling the truth and rallied us in our mission. He not only influenced the world but also changed our lives fundamentally.”
Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves expressed their condolences, acknowledging Turner as a unique individual and a passionate supporter. “Ted’s innovative spirit transformed us into ‘America’s Team.’ Under his ownership, we experienced the best era in baseball, culminating in the 1995 World Series championship,” the team stated in a post on X.
Nicholas Kristof
In a tribute, a New York Times columnist highlighted Turner’s impact on philanthropy, stating, “He redefined how wealth is used for the greater good. His $1 billion pledge to the United Nations sparked a movement in charitable giving, inspiring others to contribute to causes that truly matter.” Kristof noted that Turner made generosity fashionable, saving countless lives along the way.
