Eddie Murphy hints at a possible return to stand-up after almost 40 years

Eddie Murphy to Release New Documentary, “Being Eddie”

Eddie Murphy, the legendary comedian, is ready to share more of himself. At 64, he’s launching a new documentary titled “Being Eddie,” which celebrates 45 years since his iconic debut on “Saturday Night Live” in 1980.

In a recent appearance on the “Today” show, Murphy discussed his journey through fame, family life, and even hinted at the possibility of returning to stand-up comedy. It’s an intriguing thought. Would he really consider it again? Perhaps he would—or maybe he wouldn’t—depending on how he feels about it.

He mentioned, “I have to wake up at some point and feel like it’s going to be fun. The last time I did stand-up I was 27, and now I’m 64. It might be something else to see me in a leather suit at my age. Funny, right?”

Reflecting on his extensive career, Murphy expressed gratitude for being in the industry for so long. “I’m still here,” he noted. “Being able to do this for many years all over the globe is a special blessing. I’m most proud that I made it with my sanity and spirit intact.”

As he approaches the 50-year mark in entertainment in 2026, he recognizes it as a significant milestone. Even after decades in the public eye, Murphy remains focused on staying grounded and present, saying, “I try to spend as much time as possible thinking constructively.”

The documentary “Being Eddie” delves into his childhood, revealing that he always felt destined for stardom. “I thought I was going to be famous. I was always the funniest kid,” he remarked. However, he clarifies he wasn’t the typical class clown; he preferred a more subtle approach, often behind the scenes.

With nearly 50 films under his belt, his work spans comedic hits like “Coming to America” and his voice role as Donkey in the “Shrek” franchise. Murphy credits his family as the bedrock of his success, emphasizing, “My children are the center of everything. Family is the strongest foundation.”

With ten children from various relationships—his oldest son Eric from a past relationship and younger children with his current wife, Paige Butcher—Murphy clearly values the importance of family.

In summary, Eddie Murphy continues to reflect on his past while looking forward to future possibilities. The documentary promises to provide an insightful glimpse into his life and career.
