Inaba Addresses Tough Criticism Towards Female Contestants on DWTS
Carrie Ann Inaba, a judge on “Dancing with the Stars,” has openly acknowledged that she tends to be more critical of the female contestants compared to the male ones.
In a recent interview, she explored a theory suggesting that the judges might be harder on women. Having a background in dance, she doesn’t necessarily view that angle as a bad thing.
“I think that’s partially true,” she mentioned. As a woman judge, she feels a certain familiarity with the challenges female contestants face.
“When I talk to women, I might be a bit more direct because I think—maybe—women are tougher than men,” Inaba elaborated. Her intention, she clarified, is not to offend but to help them maximize their abilities.
She emphasized her support for women, stating, “I tell them what I see because they’re working hard. It’s my responsibility to ensure they don’t leave with regrets if they haven’t given their all.”
Inaba, who has been a judge since 2005, also said that she understands the harsh realities that women face, feeling that society is generally more critical of them. “It’s ironic that I’m accused of being hard on women when there’s a broader tendency to be tough on them,” she pointed out.
Recently, she’s faced backlash that has taken a toll on her mental health, with some audience members booing her after she announced scores. “Sometimes, the comments can be cruel, and that’s troubling. It’s like a verbal attack, especially after several weeks into the season,” she noted.
Despite the negativity, Inaba has learned to manage it over her two decades on the show. “Being true to myself helps shield me from the hate online. When I’m authentic, I find it easier to disregard what others say.”
